“Macho Man” Randy Savage often imitated, never duplicatedA man who helped revolutionize WWE wresting in the mid 80’s with his flambuoyant wrestling attire, gravel voice and unique style. I first met Randy in Puerto Rico when he came to the island to do a couple of weekend shows for WWC in 1980. That's when I first saw this man in his wild wrestling gear with a voice like nobody else in the business who went into the ring and gave 110%. He was a villain/heel at this time. In 1982 I ran across Randy again for a very short time when he came into Jerry Jarrett's ICW Promotion just as the Sheepherders were finishing their run. I heard that he had a very successfull run with Jerry Lawyer and Bill Dundee. When The Bushwhackers came to the WWF in 1988 I moved to Florida. I now was in the same company as Randy and my home was within a mile of his. On the road Randy was a perfectionist with his matches and spent a lot of time laying them out. As a result of Randy's meticulous planning Wrestlemania III's Steamboat vs. Savage match for the Intercontinental Title went down in wrestling history as one of the greatest matches of all time. No matter who his opponent was, he was the master of making a great match when least expected. Randy was a very private person and would arrive at the rear entrance of the arena with Elizabeth. She would have to look at the floor when walking past the boys to go to the locker room. He was very jealous of the boys making eye contact with her. There was a time in the early 90's when Randy pulled me aside to talk to me privately. He brought up a supposed incident that happened in a town we worked about 3 weeks earlier. He said that he saw me glaring at Elizabeth.I didn’t know what he was talking about as every night they would pass a group of us on the way to his locker room. He was very protective of Elizabeth. He laid the law down to me and if I had challenged it, the fight would have been on. Thats how strong Randy felt about his Elizabeth. We continued seeing each other every day but it was never mentioned again. In the early days WWF was running in 3 towns a night and we were on the road for 12 to 14 days straight and then have 3 days off before next tour. On TV day you would get your schedule for the next 3 weeks and first thing you would do is highlight Hulk and then Randy’s name and hope you were on the same cards as the crowds were larger which helped your annual income immensely. Although I lived in the same area as Liz and Randy I only saw them 2 or 3 times a year in the supermarket or sometimes on Hulk's boat when Hulk was still married to Linda. After 1997 when they had separated I started seeing Randy more often around Largo and the beaches. Randy started to "loosen up" alot and he'd come out on Hulk's boat with the boys and dine with us more often. "Macho Man" Randy Savage was a big part of the WWF becoming a World Wide success and Macho Man will be remembered forever for his catch phrase “ OHHHHH YEAHHH, DIG IT”. We'll miss you Randy. Rest In Peace my friend.
